Campus Recreation provides a pivotal experience for students. One of the most important facets of these spaces is the sense of community and the friendships people cultivate. This is especially true for the Temple Rock Climbing space. With the stressful events of the past two years caused by COVID many people felt the need for community more than ever. While climbing is a sport where the task is accomplished individually, the sense of community is important more than ever in order to help manage fear, and teach core climbing skills. Community allows people to experience success in failure in a healthy supportive manner.
Oftentimes new individuals will come in with trepidation and courageously make their way up the wall. As the climber's exhaustion settles into their limbs and they hear the supportive cheers from those below it is in that moment that they are hooked on climbing. This year the staff made a fall leaf decoration highlighting some of the things they and the patrons love most about the Temple Climbing Wall. This included things like the friendships made here, the music played, and the open conversations. When asked about how they believe community is important in climbing some answers included that community is how people can “explore the sport and engage the environment.” Another answer was that the community in climbing allows them to “see what really counts in life.” Finally another staff member stated how, “encouragement from other climbers pushes me to give 110%, and being able to return the favor is an incredibly fulfilling feeling.”
