About Us
Hello, and welcome to Temple University’s Office of Student Media!
Temple’s Office of Student Media advises three media outlets in the Division of Student Affairs: The Temple News (Temple’s independent, award-wining student newspaper), Templar (our award-winning yearbook) and WHIP (the university’s student-run Internet radio station). Each organization offers students of all academic disciplines the opportunity to hone their communication skills and realize their potential.
When we talk to incoming freshmen, transfer students and parents each year at the university’s Welcome Week in August, I say the same thing because I believe this to be true. Today’s college graduates are entering a challenging media industry, but I can promise you the skills our students learn at The Temple News, Templar and WHIP can be used in any area of a student’s academic and professional development.
At some point in your life, you’ll have to take large amounts of information and synthesize it into something more concise that people can understand. You can develop that skill by taking on your first assignment at The Temple News, which has been honored numerous times over the years as one of the top college newspapers and websites regionally and nationally by organizations like the Pennsylvania Newspaper Association and the Associated Collegiate Press, as well as media outlets like Editor&Publisher. Looking to develop your leadership skills? Start by managing a team of writers and photographers as a section editor at the Templar yearbook, which has been named a three-time national first place award winner by the American Scholastic Press Association. And if you’re a shy person looking to break out of your shell, get behind the microphone and produce a radio show that will be heard by your peers, the university community and anyone across the world at WHIP, our student Inernet radio station, which is also featured on iHeartRadio's College Radio lineup.
What you learn in the classroom can be applied here, and the experience you’ll gain in these student-run media organizations will give you a competitive advantage when it comes to landing internships in Philadelphia, one of the nation’s largest media markets.
Our graduates include media executives like CBS' Steve Capus, Pulitzer Prize winners like The Philadelphia Inquirer's Kristen Graham and television news anchors like ESPN's Kevin Negandhi. With Temple University’s strong student media tradition as your foundation and guide, you could be the next to follow in their footsteps.
We look forward to seeing you soon!
