Fundamentals of Physics Undergraduate certificate

Master your quantitative and modeling skills with the Undergraduate certificate in Fundamentals of Physics in Temple University’s College of Science and Technology. This 12-credit, three-course certificate program is designed for current undergraduate students interested in customizing their education with the foundations of physics. 

You’ll study the rudimentary principles of physical science as well as the rapidly evolving developments in the greater world of physics, such as quantum computing and materials science. Work with faculty members with years of hands-on experience, offering mentorship opportunities in both formal undergraduate research and informal professional development.  

Students enrolled in the program will 

  • analyze physical systems, including data and error analysis and dimensional analysis;
  • interpret the fundamental scientific principles of physics; and
  • use mathematical methods, including coordinate systems, single and multivariate calculus, and vector algebra to study physical models.

The Fundamentals of Physics Undergraduate Certificate is geared toward students interested in diversifying their academic studies with a specialization in physics.  As a graduate of the certificate program, you will be better positioned for employers seeking out candidates who have paired additional credentials such as certificates or minors with their primary area of study. By earning this undergraduate certificate, you’ll also strengthen your application for further education in the sciences or other professional programs.

Classes & Curriculum 

The curriculum for the Fundamentals of Physics Certificate (Undergraduate) includes three required courses, totaling 12 credits.  All classes are held in person at Temple’s Main Campus. 

Students enrolled in the Certificate Program in Fundamentals of Physics are required to complete two of the following classes.

  • Elementary Classical Physics I  

  • Elementary Classical Physics II 

  • General Physics I 

  • General Physics II 

  • Honors Elementary Classical Physics I 

  • Honors Elementary Classical Physics II 

  • Honors General Physics I 

  • Honors General Physics II 

In their final semester of the program, students will complete 

  • Introduction to Modern Physics.
